As you all know….I love food. In fact, I love good cheap food. If there is a hole in the wall place that serves top notch food, I’m always down for that. That doesn’t mean that I don’t like higher end foods, I just like food at decent prices. Who’s with me there?
So, it’s actually my first day back after a vacation from work. You all may think I’m strange, but, I was actually in Denver, Colorado for the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting and Expo. I’ll talk about it more a bit later and share some highlights as well as my reflections on the event. However, as crazy as I am, after the conference ended, I went back to work today and boy, let me just say, it was crazy.
It’s related actually to this challenge today, because I was so busy in the morning, that my ultimate lunch plan of going to In & Out (Yes….I missed In & Out while in Denver…don’t judge me…) went caput. With a meeting set for about an hour out in which I needed to travel to with 30 minute lunch, I decided to go to something I hadn’t had in a while, which was Habit Burger. As you can all tell, I was missing a good burger joint.
In Denver, many burger joints were out of my price range….and for me, I find it pricey to spend $20-30 on a burger. For me, burgers aren’t hard to make (I know how to make my own), and it better be exceptionally yummy for me to spend that kind of money on a burger. So, I was craving a decent burger that was on the go. With In and Out gone and Habit Burger’s computer systems completely down, let me just say…I had a moment there where I was thinking in my mind “How can I not get a burger when I have this craving for a burger?”
Long story short, I did get my burger, but it just wasn’t the same. I wanted to complain that things didn’t work out my way, but in the end, when I think about the fact that for lunch, I got a burger, that I’m grateful for the fact that I got a burger. Pure and simple.
The lesson learned for me here, is that I was so caught up in that short one hour period of wanting the burger of my choice, that I simply forgot that I have the luxury of choosing where I want to get my burger. Whether it was In and Out, Habit Burger, or an all time favorite of mine out in Davis — Burgers and Brew (If anyone is ever out in Davis near Sacramento, while in California — this is a must go place!), I’m grateful today to simply have a burger with fries despite the fact that I didn’t get my way. I think it’s an important lesson for me, that I don’t get my way all the time. Plans don’t work out. My personal timeline of goals sometimes doesn’t work out (A little more on that on another blog post as well). The lesson learned from this small incidence, and the prompt of why I’m grateful for a burger makes me see that I have a complaining heart that really wants things to go my way. Guess what? They don’t.
In conclusion, I’m grateful for that burger…because it taught me a very valuable lesson about life and about myself. It doesn’t get any better than that when it comes to gratitude — lessons learned about the self and life.
Until next time folks! Stay tuned, because there are some cool blogs coming up! One on the APHA Conference I just attended in Denver, a 5-5 Make up Series Blog post, and some exciting news…stay tuned!
